Manuscript of the Sonata for Oboe and Piano, which has become an essential part of the
oboe repertoire.
Composed at the request of Claude Delvincourt, director of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris, who wanted both to encourage young composers to "delve into the technique of the instruments", and to encourage students to work on new scores and overcome technical difficulties, this Sonata for oboe and piano was used as a competition piece for the oboe at the Conservatoire's competitions in 1947; it is dedicated to Pierre BAJEUX (1899-1961), oboe professor at the Conservatoire; it was published in 1947
by Costallat Editions.
The manuscript, in black ink on 22-line bifeuillets, presents corrections and scrapings; the original title of Sonatine has been changed to Sonate. It consists of
three movements:
Aria
(4 pages);
Scherzo (11 pages), with an important passage crossed out and redrawn
(p. 9-10);
Final (first entitled Rondo), marked Rather Going (11 pages), signed and dated at the end "22 April
1947".
