An important portico clock in white marble, black...

An important portico clock in white marble, black marble and gilt bronze, decorated with personifications of Athena and Venus on either side of military trophies such as flags and laurel wreaths. The movement enclosed in a cylinder is at the centre of a terrace decorated with flowering vases, supported by six columns decorated with garlands. The oval base is decorated with alternating scrolls of rosettes and rests on small feet in patina. An eagle with outstretched wings holds a lightning bolt in its claws. The white enamelled dial is signed "Hippolite Lapret". Threaded movement, pin-anchor escapement. With its sun balance. Late 18th century period. Height: 65 cm - Width: 44 cm - Depth: 19 cm Hippolite Lapret, watchmaker working in Paris, listed in 1786. Provenance: Tajan SVV, Paris, 24 / 06 /2008, lot 94. An identical clock with a black marble counter base is now kept at the Château de Rambouillet.
