Jacques Callot Les Grandes misères de la guerre, complete suite of 18 plates, 1633, etching, ca. 9 x 19 cm, large margins (Lieure 1339 iii/iii, L. 1340-1355 ii/iii and L. 1356 iii/iv), very fine homogeneous proofs with the address of Israel but before the name of Callot, slight reddening, watermark: Huchet in a shield (L. no. 44-46). "One of Callot's most beautiful works, one of those that are known, admired and sought after throughout the world. And this work will always be fashionable because it is universal, lived of all times and in all countries. The pages are of high inspiration and masterful composition. This engraver has transcribed his subjects with incomparable art; his point is devoid of any dryness, it has a softness, a depth in the blacks that does not exclude lightness, a particular charm that gives this work an extraordinary life. This entire suite is a masterpiece of engraving. It reveals a science that no artist, in any era, was able to push back to a higher degree. "(J. Lieure, Jacques Callot, catalogue of the engraved work, Paris, 1924-1927).
