An Indian polished schist figure of Tirthankara Parshvanatha. Gujarat. 16th century Seated in meditation on a flat cushion encircled by a snake and raising its head, both hands in dhyana mudra above the feet engraved with an eight-petalled lotus flower, swastika on the soles of the feet, the body adorned with a necklace, shrivatsa, and bracelets, the nipples are accentuated by large circles, at the back a rising snake, the spreading hood now lost. Height 49 cm Provenance Private collection, USA (according to the consignor)
