Albert MARQUET (Bordeaux 1875-Paris 1947) AVENUE DE VERSAILLES, PARIS, 1904, Fauve period Oil on canvas Signed lower right 65 x 81 cm Certificate from the Wildenstein Institute dated 6 June 1995, reference n°95.06.06/4285/1750 Marquet was an independent fauve, a follower of the movement from the very beginning. He used pure tones that he himself would grind with the sole purpose of expressing his personal sensibility. During the first years of his career from 1900 to 1910, Marquet lived almost continuously in Paris at Paris and most often on the quays, it was then that he began this admirable series of views of the capital. Marquet never tired of painting the spectacles that were offered to him from his windows. This gave him his plunging views with bold perspectives. The artist has such an extraordinary sense of life that he almost always takes care to blend man with nature. This is why these views of Paris are often dotted with small figures, passing buses. One can perceive the quick gestures and the hurried attitudes of passing pedestrians. He takes particular care with the atmosphere of each landscape. In such a way that the least of his views of Paris admits not only the season, but the time at which it was painted.
