He prefers to paint in the open air and travels a lot in France, Italy, Holland, Belgium and England. His art, attentive to atmospheric variations and changes in light, makes him one of the precursors of Impressionism. He is the landscape painter of the Romantics, for whom he appears as an innovator in the expression of nature "imbued with reality and penetrated by ideals" (Victor Hugo) His works can be found in the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and many provincial museums.
