Attribué à Ferdinand-Anne PIESTRE dit Fernand CORMON (1854-1924)
Study for La mort de Ravana, circa 1875
Oil on canvas.
78 x 98 cm
This is a study for the eponymous painting measuring 260 x 341 cm in the Musée des Grands Augustins in Toulouse (inventory no. 2004 1 1 39). The final painting in the Musée des Augustins was exhibited at the 1875 Salon under no. 514 with the indication "The favourite and the other wives of the King of Lanka find his body on the battlefield".
There are several studies for the Musée des Augustins painting, two of which were included in the sale of the Cormon estate at the Hôtel Drouot on 1 March 1984 in Paris, no. 40 "Esquisse pour La mort de Ravana" 49.5 x 71 cm, mistakenly dated 1914, and no. 59 "Mort de Ravana" 58 x 80.5 cm, also mistakenly dated 1914.
This larger study is by far the most complete.
