Master of Ventosilla (Burgos, active in the first third of the 16th century.) “Saint Apollonia of Alexandria” Tempera and gold leaf on panel. 77 x 59 cm. As Isabel Mateo indicates in her certificate: “This way of squaring and placing the figure, making it stand out against the gold brocade panel, is clearly influenced by Juan de Borgoña, in the Saint Ildefonsus reredos in the sacristy of Toledo Cathedral, and in the Saint John the Evangelist at the Chapel of Saint Martin in the same Cathedral. The influences of some of the scenes from the reredos at Ávila Cathedral, by Pedro Berruguete, are also evident. “A distinctive mark of the Master of Ventosilla,” Mateo explains, “is the special halo with decoration and areas with small stippling which the saint is wearing.” She also notes that: “we can be certain about who painted the panel of Saint Apollonia. It is only necessary to compare it to the Assumption of the Virgin by Ventosilla, and that of the Nativity in the same reredos.” The lot comes with Isabel Mateo’s certificate.
