ADOLPHE MARTIAL POTÉMONT (Paris, 1828 - Paris, 1883) SCENES ANIMÉES À MADAGASCAR, FOULPOINTE ET NOSY BE Gouaches on paper (in pair) Signed and located lower right 35,5 x 45 cm Mainly known as an aquafortist, he engraved nearly 300 views of old Paris and 57 plates on the Tales of Jean de La Fontaine, after the drawings of Jean-Honoré Fragonard From 1846 to 1882, Potémont exhibited views of Touraine, Brittany and the forest of Fontainebleau at the Paris Salon. He went to Reunion and Madagascar in 1847 and stayed there until 1857 where he executed topographic views. Our two gouaches are beautiful illustrations of the taste for exoticism in vogue in the 19th century.
