OTTO GLEICHMANN (Mainz, 1887 - Hanovre, 1963) MEETING OF PEOPLE AT THE COFFEE, CUBIST COMPOSITION 1920 Watercolour 34 x 28.5 cm A key figure in German Expressionism, Otto Gleichmann's works are influenced by the trauma of the First World War, in which he participated. In 1918, he took part in the Hanoverian Secession, where he met the Dada artist Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) and the poet Theodor Däubler (1876-1934). In this composition with its nervous drawing, the figures and tables seem to clash. The caricatured treatment is accentuated by the stern look of the individual in the left foreground, a true echo of Weimar Germany.
