Attribué à GEO (Marennes, 1853 - Paris, 1924) HENRY-JULES-JEAN GEOFFROY, dit THE EVE OF THE AWARDS Oil on cardboard Signed lower right 46 x 37 cm A little girl goes to the hairdresser to get a perm. The young man, concentrated on his task, is applying his curling iron. The look in the child's eyes shows her concern: what will she look like? A student of Eugène Levasseur (1822 - ?), Géo's style is reminiscent of Norman Rockwell's (1894-1978) illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post. Through each individual, camped out in the most everyday activity, the two artists draw a sort of common denominator of the society of their time. "These little lives are seen through a magnifying glass. They give us the illusion of being surprised in their intimacy; they seem so representative that they take on the value of symbols." (Marc Thivolet).
