MAURICE DE VLAMINCK (Paris, 1876 - Rueil-la-Gadelière, 1952) BOUQUET VARIÉ - PÉRIODE CÉZANIENNE About 1914 Oil on canvas Signed lower right Vlaminck 65 x 55 cm Certificate from the Wildenstein Institute The Autumn Salon of 1905 marked the beginning of Vlaminck's Fauvist period. The colours were initially explosive, and from 1905 to 1906, the colourful energy of his paintings was at its peak. Following his first solo exhibition at Ambroise Vollard's in the spring of 1907, Vlaminck seemed attracted by change, the use of pure colour no longer satisfied him. The Cézanne retrospective at the Autumn Salon in 1907 convinced him to follow the lessons of the Provençal master, without, however, moving towards strict cubism. In his book, Tournant dangereux (Dangerous Turn), published in 1930, he declared: "the game of pure colour, an outrageous orchestration into which I had thrown myself, no longer satisfied me. I suffered from not being able to hit harder, from having reached the maximum intensity, limited as I was by the blue or the red of the colour merchant". In our still life, Vlaminck retains from Cézanne his great principles of organization of space and a structuring of forms and volumes. He erases here the perspective, uses blue, grey applying however some blurred warm tones.
