NIKI DE SAINT-PHALLE (Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1930-La Jolla, 2002) LE GRAND CHAMEAU Painted resin Haligon stamp Signed and numbered 1/3 H. 97 cm, W. 170 cm, D. 45 cm Provenance: - Private collection, Paris Marie-Agnès de Saint Phalle was born in 1930 in Neuillysur- Seine into a family of bankers. Marie-Agnès later became Niki, which means Victory in Greek, a representation of victorious femininity among the Ancients that led her to create her Nanas from 1965 onwards. Married to Jean Tinguely, she first made a name for herself with her Séances de Tirs sur toile (Shooting sessions on canvas), which would make her one of the most media-savvy members of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. Like our camel, her monumental sculptures are colourful, enveloping and comforting. Her work is exhibited all over the world, so much so that our camel can be found in the park of Benesse House in Naoshima, a Japanese island that has been completely transformed into an open-air museum. "Nature, dragons, monsters, and the animals of my imaginary world kept me in touch with my childhood emotions. And for me, the child and the artist are inseparable." Niki de Saint Phalle
