The Phoenix and Cranes, China, 19th century
Folded fan, double sheet of embroidered cream silk. Down at the top edge. In a soft harmony of colours, a large phoenix is embroidered, resting on a rosebush in bloom. Four cranes are approaching from the left, while two others have joined a pond with water lilies.
On the reverse, branches of roses in bloom attract insects and birds. Ivory mounting*. The absence of carvings on the throat emphasizes the quality of the decoration of the deeply carved plumes of roses (6 mm thick), pagodas and figures in gardens.

In a double box. The first one in black lacquered bamboo decorated with a scholar in a garden with four characters. A couple of pheasants painted on silk under the lid. The second one in red cardboard, with a glass cover.
