The rediscovery of Asia and its culture by Europeans in the 19th century had important consequences for the development of Western esotericism. In addition to the creation of organizations such as the Theosophical Society (see lot 7105), the imagination of occultists was profoundly modified; however, it was not until the middle of the 20th century that really advanced studies on Buddhism, or on remote regions such as Tibet, became available. A title such as Asia mysteriosa illustrates well the "Far Easternizing" fascination that was then falling on the European public. Let us note that Zam Bhotiva, pseudonym of Cesare Accomani, a "rather tall, thin man, with a figure with angular features, with a voluntary jaw [whose] clear and piercing eyes illuminated his rather sympathetic physiognomy" according to the testimony of the young Mario Fille (Thimmy, La Magie à Paris, 1934), also founded the Rosicrucian order of the "Polar Fraternity" (in 1929). The two books proposed on Tantrism also illustrate two different approaches to this particular current of Hinduism.
