Hector BERLIOZ. L.A.S. to the violinist and composer Chrétien Urhan (1790-1845). 1 p. in-8 oblong. [1834].
First performance of Harold in Italy. "Here is your viola copied. We generally rehearse after tomorrow, Wednesday at noon in the Salle Vivienne (rue Neuve Vivienne). All yours. H. Berlioz".
In 1834 Berlioz entrusted Urhan with the solo viola part for the premiere of Harold in Italy, a score originally intended for Niccolò Paganini. The concert on 23 November of that year was a success, though Narcisse Girard's conducting was strongly criticised by Berlioz in his Memoirs].
