Robaut, Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre de Corot, tome II, Paris, 1905, no. 300 Camille Corot drew a remarkable source of inspiration from Italy at a time when the peninsula was more than ever part of the itinerary of many artists who came there to complete their training. Corot resided there three times between 1825 and 1843. This work was painted when he was thirty-eight years old, during his second stay, during which he immortalized the landscapes of the north of the country, Tuscany and Veneto. This painting, one of seven known representations, painted or drawn, of the city of Genoa by the artist, was part of the sale of his studio at his death in 1875, as evidenced by the stamp on the frame. It dates from a period when Corot had become accustomed to painting from life, demonstrating even then a fine balance between spontaneity and idealism. A cloud seems to appear in the foreground. In this painting, there is a particular sensitivity to light; combined with a clear composition and a synthetic brushstroke, it gives the two figures the air of moving in a calm and pure perspective. The two monks are standing on the terrace of the Palazzo di Andrea Doria, or Villa del Principe, near the balustrade overlooking the sumptuous gardens in the background. Further on, at the top left of the painting, the bright white church whose dome stands out against the blue sky is that of San Tommaso, a building destroyed in 1884 during the modernization of the port of Genoa, fifty years after this work was done.
