ENTOURAGE OF PIETER COECKE VAN AELST (Aalst, 1502 - Antwerp, 1550)
16th CENTURY ANVERSOISE SCHOOL
Holy Family Oak panel, three boards, not parqueted.
Height 83 cm, width 65 cm. (Old restorations and missing pieces).
Provenance : Orléans collection.
A Flemish 16th century painting of the Holy Family by a member of Pieter Coecke van Aelst's entourage. Oak panel painting. The prototype of this composition is the panel by Pieter Coecke van Aelst (d'Alost) from the former Joly collection (Georges Marlier, La Renaissance flamande. Pierre Coeck d'Alost, Brussels, 1966, pp. 238-239). The main variation concerns the empty and open left hand of St. Joseph, which in our painting is closed and holding a bunch of grapes, as well as the tree in the landscape, which is different.
