ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES CRESSENT (Amiens, 1685 - Paris, 1768) Pair of ormolu andirons with roaring lions. Composed of lions sitting on their hind legs and roaring out of a grotto represented by scrolls. At the top, two lions are sitting opposite each other. Regency period. Height 39.8 cm, width 30.8 cm. Provenance : Orléans collection. A pair of Regency period chiseled and gilded bronze andirons in the shape of lions exiting a cave topped by cherubs. Attributed to Charles Cressent. Bibliography : Alexandre Pradère, " Charles Cressent ", Faton editions, 2003, a pair of andirons with lions and dragons, variant of this one reproduced p. 206. This pair is a variant of a better known model where the sphinxes are replaced by loves. Another variant of the lion and dragon andirons, dated around 1725, comes from the Ennery sale in 1786. The detail of the corner of the fireplace of the palace of La Granja, made by Vassé around 1712 (originally for the Queen of Spain at the Alcazar Palace in Madrid), would be the origin of Cressent's composition.
