Painter of genre, portraits, landscapes and numerous seascapes, he was a student of Navez in Brussels and Roqueplan in Paris. His first paintings date from 1848 and he exhibited in Paris where he made a career and lived most of his time. At the beginning, Stevens painted women and more particularly Parisian women of the Second Empire. His drawing was precise, his painting clear and luminous, his brushwork quite rich. He bought several paintings from Manet and it was in his studio that Durand-Ruel saw his first two paintings, which he bought. Stevens will remain an important artist of his time
