EXCEPTIONAL AND LARGE ALTARPIECE Hainaut, circa 1450-1460 In sandstone limestone, carved, gilded and polychromed, representing the Lamentation at the feet of the Cross. On either side Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Stephen, Saint Lawrence and Saint Sebastian under under gothic canopies. Inscriptions: Respicias qua vi pia Deus tua noxia lavi Condoleas matri que flet ut ista tubi ("Consider at the cost with what pious violence I, your God, have washed away your faults. Compatiate with the pain of my mother who weeps over the torments I have endured"). H: 119 x W: 150 x D: 24.5 cm Provenance: - Abbey church of Saint-Denis-en-Broqueroie, Mons. - Acquired in 1798 by Jean Constant Fidèle Duval, ancestor of the present owners
