Théodore RIVIERE (1857-1912) THEODORE RIVIÈRE (1857-1912) "A chryselephantine sculpture in gilt bronze partially silvered and set with a pearl, an opaline and an aquamarine, circular base resting on a bevelled octagonal pedestal in black marble veined with red. Height 35cm. Signed in the decoration, titled and stamped by the founder Susse frères Paris, circa 1895. N.B.: Work also entitled "Salammbô chez Mathô, Je t'aime ! je t'aime ! "The subject is taken from Gustave Flaubert's novel published in 1862. Théodore Rivière chose the moment when the Libyan Mâthô, massacred by the people, dies at the feet of the beautiful Salammbô, crying out: "I love you! I love you! ».
