ROGER
JAZZ MAYNARD
Complete Black Trio (T.1), Dargaud 2020
Contrastes, original illustration. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper
70 × 31.5 cm (27.56 × 12.40 in.)
There is an obvious contrast in this street scene set in the El Raval district of Barcelona. Jazz is walking among several local prostitutes who look at him with a certain irony. Faced with the proposals, Jazz, with his gaze downcast, carries in his hands a bouquet of flowers that is undoubtedly intended for his sweetheart. In addition to the detailed drawing of the buildings, the three silhouettes in the foreground stand out, for which Roger offers a treatment of shadows and crosshatching, thus provoking more depth of field in relation to the characters in the background, who are less inked. The flat black areas in the two corners of the illustration frame the scene perfectly.
"This illustration, in which we can barely see the Barcelona neighbourhood of El Raval, reflects in my opinion perfectly what this neighbourhood is: Jazz Maynard walking with a pretty bouquet of flowers among the prostitutes. Beautiful and sordid at the same time. " Raule.
