Islamic mortar with animal depictions Golden yellow engraved bronze casting with natural patina and verdigris in the depressions. Cylindrical, with horizontal upper and curved flared lower rim. Circumferential central bead between two ornamental bands: Below four cartouches with hunting game, above four cartouches with calligraphy, between each small round medallions with birds. Around the upper rim the same calligraphy cartouches, around the foot an engraved braided band. The base concavely carved, small breakouts at the rims. H 13,5, D 16 cm, weight ca. 4,8 kg. Khorasan, northwest Afghanistan/Iran, attributed, 12th - 14th century. Provenance Soil find, Herat, northwest Afghanistan.
