Islamic mortar with silver inlays
Cast bronze with engraving, inlaid in silver, verdigris in places due to corrosion. Cylindrical, with a console-like upper rim. Circumferential two rows of six drops or tears in relief, interspersed with silver knot ornaments and birds. A calligraphy band on top. Slightly concave hewn bottom. H 13,3, D 13,6 cm, weight ca. 4,2 kg. Conical pestle with ball handle and surrounding decorative bands: Calligraphy and drops, one damage on top (probably casting defect), l 21,5 cm.
Khorasan/Iran, attributed, 12th - 13th century.
