The sitter is Walter Ophey's future wife Bernhardine, gen. Dotty (1879-1968). The two met in Düsseldorf in 1904 and married there in 1917. Of the numerous portraits of Bernhardine, the earliest, painted in 1905, is today in the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf (Kraus G 124).
