Provenance Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia/USA; since then in family possession Exhibitions Cologne 1957 (Kölnischer Kunstverein), 20th century painting in Cologne private collection, cat.no. 26 In mid-April 1922 Lyonel Feininger spent a few days in Neubrandenburg. Here, on 16 April, he made the first pencil study of the motif of a tree-lined country road, later titled by the artist "Chaussee bei Neubrandenburg" (today in the Harvard Art Museum/Busch-Reisinger Museum). On September 21, 1923, Feininger worked the motif into a watercolor ink drawing that defined the background in greater detail. Three days later, he produced the final version presented here. It shows a tense network of crossing vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines that lends the actually simple landscape motif a powerful dynamic.
