Pieter Bout was born in Brussels and joined the guild of Saint Luc in 1671. The same year he left for Paris where he met Adrian Boudewyns, thirteen years his senior, who had been living in France at the request of Louis XIV since 1669. The two painters collaborated frequently between 1671 and 1675, when Boudewyns returned to Brussels.
