PENDE MASK, Democratic Republic of Congo
Medium-hard wood, pigments.
H. 23 cm
A work whose cubist lines are strikingly modern. The face is inscribed in a heart, the details sculpted in high relief. The eyes are made up of two cylinders, the thin, stretched nose surmounts a mouth inscribed at the tip of the mask. White-tinted chevrons adorn the lower part, oblique scarifications inscribed on the cheeks.
