BAOULE PULLEY IVORY COAST
Half-hard wood with brown patina.
H. 21 cm
Spectacular Baoule loom pulley stirrup, carved with an elephant. The wide, gadrooned fork forms the legs of the pachyderm, and supports a ringed neck on which rests the head adorned with large ears, tusks and trunk projected in horizontal patterns. The high proportions of this ancient object, the quality of its sculpture, combined with its notorious provenance, are remarkable.
