First edition of this exceptional work on watchmaking by the famous Swiss watchmaker Berthoud (1725-1807), established in Paris in 1745. His Essai sur l'horlogerie, whose principles are all confirmed by experience, is the most important basic work among his other publications; it is illustrated with 38 folded technical plates, drawn by Goussier and engraved on copper by Pierre-Philippe Choffard.
Ferdinand Berthoud, whose chronometers are among the best and most accurate of his time, was watchmaker to the Royal Navy, member of the Institute, member of the Royal Society of London, and watchmaker to Louis XVI. One hinge cracked, one cap missing, corners dulled, light rings to the plates of the first volume. (Tardy 51) (Brunet I, 819 "One of the most esteemed works on this art").
