Boar with snake. Ivory. Late 19th century.
The snake has already wrapped its tail tip around the boar's flank as it lambently approaches its head. The eyes of the snake are double inlaid with yellowish and dark brown horn, the pupils of the boar are made of black horn.
The snake and the boar face each other (as the sixth and twelfth animals) in the zodiac. A simultaneous representation of these animals illustrates the wise and thoughtful powers of observation of the snake paired with the courage, strength and ruthless determination of the boar.
