Rare clay sculpture of a mourner, Lower Bavaria, Landshut or Straubing, c. 1450, Very beautifully and richly detailed modelled figure made of terracotta, the robe and the cloak with rich drapery, standing on a narrow plinth. Hollowed inside, remains of an old setting. L. rest., from the estate of the Georges Schaltenbrand Collection (1897-1979), acquired from Hugo Helbing, Munich, auction 9/10 June 1930, lot 490 The sitter may be a mourning Virgin from a crucifixion scene or a female figure from a group of mourning figures.
