Organette with a Fiddler Monkey
Attributed to Jérôme Thibouville.
Late 19th century.
Seated in front of a music stand, an automaton violinist monkey accompanies with his bow the music of the organette on which he is installed.
This charming subject reminds us of the time when musicians were dressed as monkeys, so as not to confuse them with people of quality...
Bears the label of the Maison Simonne, passage Delorme at 188 rue de Rivoli in Paris, which exercised its trade from 1836 to 1893.
Automaton with 6 movements.
Movement of the head from top to bottom - Rotation of the head - opening of the mouth - Eyes
Movement of the arms - Bow stroke -
The musical instrument
17 notes reed instrument. A marquetry net decorates the front.
The action of the crank turns the cylinder of 6 tunes which plays its repertoire, and compresses air in the blower to make the reeds vibrate.
State of preservation
Complete and "natural" this set has remained very fresh; the movements need a little lubrication. The organette needs to be revised
