Eugène CLARY (1856-1929). Les Andelys, the Seine and the fortress of Château-Gaillard in snowy weather. Oil on canvas signed lower right. 46 x 80 cm. Jean-Eugène Clary, known as Eugène Clary, born in Paris on June 14, 1856, died in Andelys in 1929, was a French landscape painter. A student of César de Cock, he first exhibited at the 1878 Salon, then at the Salons of the Société nationale des beaux-arts and the Salon des artistes français. He won a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He followed the dissidents who founded the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts, of which he became an associate in 1890, then a member in 19201. He painted many Norman landscapes and several of his paintings are kept in the Museum of Art and History in Lisieux and in the Nicolas-Poussin Museum in Andelys, where he ended his life. Works by the artist are kept at the Musée d'Orsay (Portrait of Suzanne Valadon) as well as in the museums of Normandy: Les Andelys (The Seine and the Château Gaillard), Louviers, and Lisieux
