Salvador DALI (1904-1989) Compression, 1979. Exceptional piece from the artist. Assembled brass plates. Original and unique proof made for the creation of the bas-relief adorning the cover of Sigmund FREUD's book Moses and Monotheism. Signed. Unique piece. Signed. H : 57 ; W : 50 ; D : 20 cm Provenance: Mrs Ariane LANCELL The authenticity of this piece has been confirmed by Mr Robert DESCHARNES. The work that we present is the original sculpture realized by Salvador Dali for Mrs Ariane LANCELL, This last one, art editor, meets Dali in 1968. The charm of the redheaded and flamboyant beauty acts on the master who nicknamed her "Etincelle". Etincelle and Dali decide to collaborate on the realization of a massive book containing precious lithographs on lambskin inspired by the writings of Sigmund FREUD Moses and Monotheism. Their collaboration lasted four years between 1970 and 1974; from this work a sculpture was created in 1979, using the brass plates used to engrave the pages of the manuscript. A plaster cast and a preparatory model were made in 1973. Our sculpture is therefore the result of this research work and differs from the master's usual works. The appearance of the compressions is a major event in the history of art. With this new approach, the artist no longer creates a sculpture or a form but transforms the form. The reference to the language of the New Realists, in particular César and Arman, is obvious; nevertheless, Dali is singular because he does not compress the symbols of everyday life, but chooses to reduce to the state of a cube the representations of biblical episodes.
