"As Didier Lombard, O Paul Lombard
You watch standing on the tower this war
Beware lest a council of the once civil
Make in the twinkling of an eye a terrible brigand."
This "epistolary poem" was addressed to the journalist Paul Lombard on March 15, 1915. Paul Lombard had collaborated with the Soirées de Paris, Apollinaire's magazine. Apollinaire dedicated a chapter of Le Poète assassiné to him.
This quatrain appears in the "Poèmes épistolaires" of Apollinaire's OEuvres poétiques, Pléiade edition, p.827.
