Colombes, Maurice Vautier, pole vaulting
Collections L'Équipe
22 June 1924.
It was on a thin layer of sand and from a height of 3.70m that Maurice Vautier fell at the French Championships qualifying for Paris 1924. On 9 July, with 3.55m, his hopes of qualifying for the Olympic final were dashed. National champion since 1922 (he would remain so until 1927), the 23-year-old Norman was then the best in France in this daredevil sport. Olympic champion in 1924 with a jump of 3.95m, the American Lee Barnes is known for having been a stuntman in Hollywood.
