17th century Italian school, after Caravaggio, canvas, without frame, restorations
109,5 x 124 cm - 43,1 x 48,8 in.
Our canvas is a reworking of one of Caravaggio's earliest masterpieces housed in the Sans-Souci Palace, Potsdam (canvas, 107 x 146 cm; Cf. Sébastien Schütze: Caravaggio, the Complete Works, 2015; Cat. 28, repr.). Commissioned by Vincenzo Giustiniani and painted in Rome around 1600, this painting was presented in a black baguette with gold motifs when it was inventoried at the Giustiniani home in 1638. It arrived in Prussia in 1815, after the dispersion of this Italian collection.
