PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER
oil on canvas
71½ x 56 ½cm. / 28 x 22in.
Infantry officer of the period of the American War of Independence wearing the uniform prescribed from 1768. The sitter is almost certainly an officer of the Militia, which was embodied in 1777, and the portrait may therefore be dated circa 1780.
