The small panel was probably originally part of a larger polyptych in which it was accompanied by other figures of auxiliary saints ("who bring help"). These saints were invoked especially during severe natural disasters or for protection against certain misfortunes or dangers. Saint Christopher has always been adored as the patron saint of those involved in transport, such as boatmen, pilgrims, commuters, walkers, travellers, porters, railwaymen and drivers.
