FLEMISH SCHOOL circa 1600, follower of Jan Gossaert Virgin and Child Oak panel with parquet floor Frame : Gilded wood frame, Italian work around 1600 59 x 46.5 cm Although Gossaert's original prototype is no longer known to us, the composition survives in numerous numerous workshop versions, or early copies; for example, the one formerly in a private collection in private collection in Stuttgart and the one in the STAATLICHE Kunstsammlungen und Museum in Dessau (both reproduced in M. Friedlander Early Netherlandish Paintings, Vol. VIII, Gossaert and Bernard Van Orley, N°s 38 A and 38B, plate 36), as well as the one kept in a private collection in Stuttgart rep. In La renaissance of Jan Gossaert, Man, Myth and Sensuality, Metropolitan Museum, 2010 fig.160 p. 157. Another studio version was sold in Paris, Hotel Drouot, 3-4 July 1969, no. 74 (wood, 55.5 x 47cm).
