VENTURA ÁLVAREZ SALA VIGIL (Gijón, 1869-1919) "Marina", 1913. Oil on canvas. Presents repainting and faults. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 75 x 137 cm; 98 x 159 cm (frame). In this landscape format canvas the author collects the view of the sea from the shore of the beach. The stillness of the calm sea is somewhat disturbed by the presence of a barrel floating on the shore and a woman holding a basket in her hands. The young woman in profile to the viewer, seems to undertake a task, perhaps the collection of clams or other mollusks. The solitude of the lady, added to the moment of the day portrayed by the author, when the first rays of light are appearing, but the darkness of the night still dominates, are features that make up a painting imbued with a certain nostalgia. Ventura Álvarez began his academic training as a disciple in the workshop of El Vizcaíno. Later he enrolled in the art school of Gijón until he decided in 1890 to move to Madrid to complete his academic training. In the capital he received the teachings and influences of Manuel Ojeda. During this period he participated in several exhibitions in which he received several honorable mentions. He was awarded the Rome scholarship by the Casino de Gijón. Later he returned to his hometown, where he established his studio.
