Henry CROS (1840-1907) Le jardin des Hespérides Rare vase with a circular body in polychrome glass paste decorated with characters picking apples surrounded by a flowerbed of lilies in yellow, turquoise, green and white, on a purplish background punctuated with blue, pink and milky-white powders Around 1890-1900 H: 29 cm As in the vase we are proposing, Henry Cros' works are full of voluptuous gravity, of life without problems, where indolent women compose peaceful scenes with decoration and colourings that are imbued with the charm of ancient myths. These vases are called "closed vases" and are made up of two parts that are then welded together by fire. After having perfected a process and found the appropriate material, Henry Cros then created, in bas-reliefs of Hellenic inspiration, a very personal style, where, in the middle of a calm and stripped universe, take place ancient women, with serene attitudes, in a harmonious composition which reminds that of a fresco. This meditative atmosphere echoes Puvis de Chavannes, with its matte pallor and similar flat tints, with an undeniable delicate charm that the colours sublimate and surround. Henry Cros is more a sculptor and painter in search of a means of expression than a glassmaker in search of a technique.
