DEROY, Isidore-Laurent View of San Francisco. Vista de San-Francisco. Paris L. Turgis [1851-1878] Lithograph, 39,5 x 55,5 cm, printed in colour and later finished by hand, arabic gum (borders trimmed with series title cut off, a bit soiled). Panoramic view of San Francisco, with people on a hill in the foreground. The California Gold Rush of 1848 saw the city expand rapidly with thousands of immigrants flocking into California to seek their fortune. "According to Joseph Armstrong Baird and Edwin Clyve Evans in their monumental work Historic Lithographs of San Francisco (1972), this view may have been based on wood engraved letter sheet prototypes by Adolphe Rouargue, a Parisian printer.
