Seltener musealer Barocker Serpentinhumpen
Dark green-grey, brown-grained garnet serpentine and silver mounting, gilt. Around the body two silver hoops decorated with volutes and divided in two by profile lines. Handle and lid of gilded silver. The base ring with a serrated, engraved leaf frieze. Curved ear handle on the back. On top a sculpted female figure and the thumb rest formed of volutes. Flatly domed lid, subdivided by cartouches and surrounded by flowers, fruits and tendril ornaments in relief, with a silver coin set into the centre. On the obverse side of the coin is a profile depiction to the right of Duke Johann Philipp looking towards a stylised knight's helmet. The duke's head shares the date 1624 and is framed by four escutcheons, an orb and the words "D G IOH PHIL FRID IOH WILH ET FR WIL FRAT". The reverse also shows a profile depiction to the right of the three brothers of Duke Johann Philipp, framed by five escutcheons, the mintmaster's mark and the inscription "DVC SAXON IVL CLIVI ET MONT LIN ALDE". Design, hallmark, master probably Zacharias Schlosser the Younger (learned 1640-1646). Weight ca. 1420 g. H. 19 cm. Cf. Rosenberg, Vol. II, No. 1764. A very rare Saxon Baroque serpentine tankard with gilt silver mounts. City and master's mark. Saxony. Dresden. Mid 17th century.
