The work is included in the supplement of the catalogue raisonné by the artist under the number 1901-1910,34. Provenance In family possession since circa 1910, North Rhine-Westphalia Christian Landenberger studied at the Munich Academy of Art - initially under Franz von Defregger, but then primarily under the influence of impressionist artists such as Wilhelm Leibl, Fritz von Uhde and Max Liebermann. In 1892 Landenberger was among the founding members of the Munich Secession. In 1904 he was appointed professor at the Stuttgart Academy of Art, where Oskar Schlemmer would be among his students. Our painting is an impressive example of Landenberger's exceptional talent in handling light and atmosphere. He found the motifs for his bathing scenes, which are defined by their extreme sense of immediacy, along the waters of southern Germany, for example, at Lake Starnberg or - in this case - the Ammersee. The painter frequently applied them to the canvas directly on location, “en plein air”. Like “Badende Knaben am See” from 1908, which now has its home in Munich at the Neue Pinakothek of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, our large-format scene featuring three bathing boys is among the artist's important works.
