Spanish school, XVIII century.
"Christ with angel collecting his spilled blood".
Oil on burlap.
Measurements: 88 x 71 cm.
An iconography of medieval origin, the theme of the angel collecting in a chalice the blood that flows from the wound of Jesus crucified, appears here collected in this painting of late-baroque period. The winged character, represented as an archangel, takes with both hands the sacred cup, symbol of the Eucharist and of the sacramental conversion of the wine into redemptive blood. Expressive light contrasts model both bodies to make them emerge from the dark background.
