Main work of the Venetian humanist Hermolao Barbaro (1454-1493) and first rigorous critical study of Pliny's work: The publication of Ermolao Barbaro's Castigationes was to open a new stage. This major work of textual criticism revealed, through the collation of manuscripts and reflection on the text, a large number of places that needed to be corrected in the text of the Pliny encyclopedia. Barbaro's main corrections were frequently adopted by successive editors of the text (Marie-Elisabeth Boutroue, Pliny the Elder: The Natural History).
Incunabulum printed in long-line Roman type.
Restored corners, otherwise a pleasant copy.
