Left leaf of a carved ivory diptych representing the Glorious Virgin under a large arcature with redents, surmounted by a gable with hooks and fleuron. Mary carries the Child on her left side, presenting him with a floral bud with her right hand; she is framed by two cerulean angels. The background is delicately decorated with a fleur-de-lis pattern, the redents with cut leaves and the spandrels with fantastic birds. Beautiful orange patina.
Paris, middle of the 14th century
Height: 13 cm - Width: 8,1 cm - Thickness: 0,8 cm - Weight: 100 g
Round label on the back with the number 87 (old restoration to the lower right border, holes in the thickness of the lower part)
This Virgin was opposite a Crucifixion which adorned the right side. It is of very classical workmanship and of good quality, very similar to a left panel of a diptych in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Inv. no. 555-1910, fig.). We find a similar attitude and identical lateral falls of the part of the coat which returns in apron on the front.
This leaf is moreover remarkable by its decoration - trace of an old polychromy or gilding? - of a great delicacy of execution; the sowing of flowers of lily can make think of a command probably resulting from the royal circle.
